Team In Focus ~ Year 3 Gold
Weekend Match Day Report
Sunday 28th July Year 3 Gold v Booragoon
The year 3 Gold team hosted the Booragoon Bulldogs in Round 10 on a perfect day for football. The Bulldogs team has struggled for consistent numbers during the year and this round gave us the opportunity to even them up with some of our strongest players having a quarter each with their side (Thanks to our players who went across this week). Whilst our Hawks were a bit rusty in the first quarter, the team soon settled into our groove and focused on the key three pillars of our game style – strong tackling, lots of voice and moving the ball SUPER-FAST.
Piling on almost 20 goals during the game, a feature of our play was the fact that nearly all our goals were kicked on the run or from playing on from marks. We ask our players to ‘play on at all costs’ and this has caught all our opponents by surprise throughout the year. Instrumental in this again on the weekend were Buda, Tate and Wongy who all weaved through packs to dish out handballs and kick goals themselves during the day. They were ably supported by Kaden and Hoppy who read the play beautifully and hit the scoreboard, whilst Samuel starred in the first half with strong marking and running through the middle of the ground and Pato providing plenty of dash and poise across half back.
As pleasing as our attacking play was the discipline and resilience of everyone who went through the backline, enabling us to keep the opposition scoreless throughout the day. Luke, Matteo, Jackson and Toby were impassable; Jack provided first use with great tapwork; Noah, Kaelen and Alex got in and under the packs and Batesy added a couple of good goals in the second half.
Next week promises to be a tougher assignment against Willeton at home (a team we only just got over the top of last round) and we will be strengthened by the return of Neel and our future AFLW star Nilasha. The team is playing an exciting brand of footy and we encourage all footy lovers (who can get out of bed on Sunday for an 8.30am start!) to come and watch just how well this group of year 3’s link up and move the ball fast by hand and foot.
